Former South African President Jacob Zuma has said he is ready to return to politics as a candidate for the party’s presidential election in December if members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) nominate him. Zuma, 80, served as president from 2009 to 2018 but was forced to resign over widespread allegations of corruption in the government and state institutions.

He was sentenced to 15 months in prison last year for disobeying a court order to testify before a judicial commission investigating corruption during his tenure and has since been released on parole. Zuma is also on trial for corruption in a major arms deal. In a statement released late this year, Zuma said some members of the ANC had approached him to consider running for party presidency by the end of this year.

“I have indicated that if it is necessary to serve at this level or any other level in the organization, I will not rule out running for the position of president,” he said at a party meeting to be held later this year. president will be crucial to the future of Cyril Ramaphosa, who faces stiff opposition to be re-elected as leader of the ANC and remain the country’s president.
