Bishop Jimennis has been surrounded by allegations of sexual abuse of boys in East Timor in the 1990s. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement that the sex abuse agency had received complaints “about Bishop Jimenez’s conduct” in 2019 and banned him within a year.

According to the statement, Bishop Jimenias’ movement and powers have been restricted and he has been barred from voluntary contact with minors or contact with East Timor. The statement said the sanctions were “reviewed and reapplied” in November 2021, and on both occasions Bishop Jimenias formally recognized the sanctions imposed on him.
