Security strengthened in Kolkata in view of Durga Puja, set up 400 outposts

Vineet Goyal told reporters that the full deployment started today on the day of Durga Puja Chaturthi and will continue until the end of this festival. He said that if more people gather during the festival days than expected, additional police officers would be deployed.

Kolkata. Security across the city was bolstered on Thursday as devotees thronged the popular Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata. A total of 17,000 police officers, including 10,000 Home Guard personnel, have been deployed in the city and 400 outposts have been set up in various places. In addition, 58 PCR trains and 41 Rapid Response Teams have been deployed. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel said this deployment of security personnel will continue even during Vijaya Dashami and idol immersion.

Vineet Goyal told reporters that the full deployment started today on the day of Durga Puja Chaturthi and will continue until the end of this festival. He said that if more people gather during the festival days than expected, additional police officers would be deployed. The police commissioner said a contingency plan has been prepared in advance to deal with such situations, be it rain or overcrowding.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast rain on the day of Mahasaptami on Oct. 2, bearing in mind that people have already made plans to go to the puja pandal. Lovers in new clothes head to the popular puja pandals. Many of those pandals have already been inaugurated. In recent days, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has inaugurated several Durga Puja pandals including hugely overcrowded pandals like Chetla Agrini, Sreebhumi Sporting Club, Suruchi Sangha.
