Odisha: Court sentences man to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor

Balasore. A court in Odisha’s Balasore district has sentenced a 28-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl. Special Judge (POCSO) Ranjan Kumar Sutar also imposed a fine of Rs 14,000 on Santosh Singh on Tuesday. Singh, a resident of Kamarkhali village, was arrested by the police in February 2020 on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. The victim’s mother alleged that her 14-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by the accused, due to which she suffered health problems.

Additional Public Prosecutor Pranab Kumar Panda said, “Accused Santosh Singh was tried under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and convicted under the POCSO Act.” The convict will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 20 years and pay a fine of Rs 14,000.” The court also ordered an amount of Rs four lakh to be given as compensation to the victim through the District Legal Services Authority.
