New Delhi. A court here has acquitted 10 accused of allegedly destroying a house by setting it on fire in a case linked to the 2020 riots in northeast Delhi. However, the court said they would be charged with rioting. The court heard a case in which accused allegedly indulged in rioting and set fire to the prosecution’s vehicle parked on a road in the vicinity of Maujpur on the morning of February 25, 2020. Additional hearings Judge Amitabh Rawat noted. noted that the charge of setting fire to with intent to destroy the house was not framed, as the complainant’s vehicle was allegedly burned on the road. Justice Rawat only treated it as a crime of rioting and turned it over to the magistrate concerned.

“I therefore believe that there is grounds to believe that the accused committed the crime, but cannot be specifically tried by the Court of Session,” the judge said in his Sept. 28 order. An FIR has been registered against individuals Mohammad Saleem, Mehrajuddin, Shoaib, Haji Islam, Anish Malik, Arif Saifi, Shanu Malik, Bobby, Furqan and Mohammad Salman under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including riots.
