Bangalore. The Karnataka Congress on Wednesday filed a police complaint against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president J P Nadda, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, alleging that they bribed voters to woo voters in the upcoming state assembly elections. State Congress President DK Shivakumar and Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah have signed the complaint. He has requested the police to register a case in this regard and investigate. Assembly elections in the state are due in May and the complaint has been filed after Gokak’s BJP MLA Jarkiholi allegedly announced Rs 6,000 per vote.

Jarkiholi had to resign as minister in 2021 after his alleged involvement in a sex scandal. He had reportedly said at a recent rally in Belagavi that if a sitting Congress MLA gave gifts and cash worth Rs 3,000 to voters, he would give gifts and cash worth Rs 6,000 to voters. However, the state unit of the BJP has distanced itself from the MLA’s statement. The complaint states that on January 22, 2023, senior BJP leader, former cabinet minister and MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi announced in Karnataka’s Belagavi that his party would pay Rs 6,000 per vote to each voter in the upcoming assembly elections. This statement was recorded on camera.

Along with the complaint, a copy of the video footage of the statement has also been attached as evidence. This complaint has been lodged at the High Grounds police station here. The Congress alleges that this is part of a conspiracy hatched at the highest levels in the BJP with the tacit approval of Chief Minister and BJP Legislature Party leader Bommai, Nadda and party state chief Nalin Kumar Kateel.
